Adventures at CROMO

Sunday, August 18, 2013 - 13:22

I got a chance to spend a week at our research site, the Coast Range Ophiolite Microbial Observatory (CROMO), in Lower Lake California.  On this sampling trip, I ventured out into the unknown with Melitza and Katrina where we sampled all twelve of the wells. The first full sampling day was filled with learning the procedures for collecting water samples. I was responsible for collecting water samples as my project deals heavily with fixed and live samples. These water samples are used for assessing the abundance of microbes in the wells and for in-lab cultures. In regards to my specific research, I am interested in assessing the diversity of the microbial communities and determining the essential nutrients needed; and how those nutrients may affect microbial diversity. The trip was a success and we were even greeted by some of the CROMO residents!
