Field sampling in Italy

Sunday, July 1, 2012 - 16:46

We spent 5 days at our field sampling site in northern Italy at a pH 12 spring filtering water to be used for DNA work so we can determine what microbes are present in the water.  Generally, just a milliliter of marine or lake water would provide more than enough DNA for the analyses we use, however, because the biomass of these samples is so low, we had to filter over 500 L of water to get enough sample.
